The unique character of South Tyrol’s farmhouses has been created over centuries by people living and working in the alpine habitat. The unique, yet diverse forms of South Tyrol’s farmhouses reflect a deep understanding of the relationship between necessity and form, and a commitment to sustainability. The farmhouses are at risk due to their old age, particularly in situations in which it seems more convenient to forgo renovating a farmhouse and build a new building instead. Keeping up with the times doesn’t have to mean rejecting traditions. Realizing modern functionality shouldn’t result in alienation and destruction. Choices of construction, building materials, location and ensemble speak their own language.
The Dr. Viktoria Schulz Steinkeller Foundation aims to rescue and protect threatened buildings in order to preserve the characteristic features of rural building culture and settlement forms. This creates a visible memory of a culture that is closely linked to its living space. The Foundation intends to provide funding for this purpose. More information on our work, past projects and how to apply for funding is available upon request.
